Goethe Institute presents more than 50 photos in Gomel art gallery

8 July 2009
GOMEL, 8 July (BelTA) – Two exhibitions of more than 50 photos will take place in the Vaschenko Art Gallery in Gomel under the auspices of the Goethe Institute in Minsk. The exhibitions will stay open from 7 July to 2 August, BelTA learned from Director of the Gallery Liudmila Shimbaleva. The first display is Stefan Koppelkam’s photos. The exhibition named “Local Time” is accompanied by the author’s brief remarks. While touring East Germany in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall and before the reunion of Germany, the photographer tried to ‘freeze the moment’. About twelve years after the author visited the same places again and took the photos of the same houses, streets and squares from the same camera angle. The final pairs of photos show the pervasive changes of the German towns and the whole German society. The second exhibition is “The Explanatory Dictionary” by Mikhail Barazna and Ekaterina Kenigsberg from Minsk. The explanatory dictionary in photos explains the meaning of the familiar words discovering the descriptive features of the text. The isolated words create new images, which get a new place in the universe. The Vaschenko Art Gallery in Gomel and the Goethe Institute in Minsk launched the international cooperation project six years ago. Every year the residents of Gomel are able to get familiar with modern German and Belarusian arts.
