Centennial anniversary of football in Belarus to be celebrated in Gomel

GOMEL, 19 August (BelTA) – On 20 August Gomel will become the venue for the festive events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of football in Belarus, BelTA was told in the press service of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee It was Gomel that hosted Belarus’ first football match between two local teams which had been reported in the press on 20 August 1911. Actually, football began to develop in Gomel a year earlier thanks to a local enthusiast - an employee of a bank who started coaching a team made up of students from the Gomel Gymnasium. The Gomel stadium will host a match between Belarus’ football enthusiasts and veteran footballers of Gomel. Among other events will be the Gomel Oblast U21 championship final on 20 August and a children’s football festival. Attending the celebrations will be Chairman of the Belarusian Football Federation Sergei Rumas, representatives of local authorities and Belarus’ well-known football players.
