Gomel to play host to Junior Figure Skating Grand Prix tournament in 2008

On October 1-5, 2008, Gomel will play host to a Junior Figure Skating Grand Prix tournament. The decision has been passed by the International Skating Union (ISU) at a session in Switzerland, BelTA learnt from Igor Poluyan, the chief of the physical culture, sport and tourism department of the Gomel Town Council. The Grand Prix is a world cup in figure skating among U21 athletes and is held in various countries. Recently foreign experts have visited Gomel to see its ice arena. They have made a conclusion that it is fitted to meet the ISU requirements. According to Igor Poluyan, Gomel will become the first city in the post-Soviet area to host such a high-level event. Competing in the tournament will be figure skaters from 35 countries. An organizational committee will be set up soon to handle the preparations for he international tournament.
